Hero's Journey Poses

🏔️ Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

Instructions: Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart. Spread your toes wide and root down through the edges of your feet. Lengthen your spine, relax your shoulders down, and let your arms hang naturally with your palms facing forward. Keep your chin parallel to the floor and gaze straight ahead. Breathe deeply.

Benefits: Mountain Pose improves posture, balance, and self-awareness. It strengthens your thighs, knees, and ankles while reducing flat feet.

⚔️ Warrior 1 Pose (Virabhadrasana I)

Instructions: From Mountain Pose, step one foot back and bend your front knee up to a 90-degree angle. Pivot your back foot to about a 45-degree angle. Raise your arms overhead and gaze forward or slightly up, keeping your torso upright.

Benefits: Warrior 1 stretches the chest, lungs, shoulders, and belly. It also strengthens the arms and shoulders, and improves balance.

🌳 Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Instructions: Return to Mountain Pose. Lift one foot and press the sole into the inner thigh or calf of the other leg (avoid the knee). Hands come to Anjali mudra at your heart, or raise them overhead.

Benefits: Tree Pose strengthens the thighs, calves, ankles, and spine, stretches the groins and inner thighs, and improves sense of balance.

🦅 Crow Pose (Bakasana)

Instructions: Start in a yogi squat with your knees wider than your hips. Lean your torso forward between your thighs. Reach your arms forward and set your hands down shoulder-width apart, then bend your elbows and rest your knees against the back of your upper arms. Shift your weight forward and lift your feet off the floor.

Benefits: Crow Pose strengthens the wrists, forearms, and abdomen, improves balance and full-body coordination.

🛡️ Fallen Warrior Pose

Instructions: Start in Downward-Facing Dog. Extend your right leg back, then bring your right knee to your right elbow. Glide the right knee to the left elbow, then extend the right leg out to the side. Finally, float the left hand up towards the sky, opening your chest and gaze to the lifted hand.

Benefits: Fallen Warrior strengthens the arms, core, and the supporting leg, while opening the hips and chest. It is a wonderful pose for enhancing balance and coordination.

🎡 Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana)

Instructions: Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor hips width distance in front of the sits bones. Place your hands on the floor beside your head, then press your feet and hands down while lifting your hips and chest towards the ceiling.

Benefits: Wheel Pose strengthens the arms, legs, abdomen, and spine, and stretches the chest and lungs.

🕊️ Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana)

Instructions: Start in Downward-Facing Dog. Bring one leg under your body, letting your shin rest on the floor, while extending your other leg behind you. You can remain upright or lean forward.

Benefits: Pigeon Pose stretches the thighs, groins, and abdomen, and opens the chest and shoulders. It can also alleviate sciatic and lower back pain.

What is the Hero's Journey?

The Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell

The Hero's Journey is a universal narrative concept that was brought to light by renowned mythologist Joseph Campbell in his seminal work, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". This narrative blueprint depicts a cyclic voyage of growth, transformation, and self-realization that transcends cultures and timeframes, underlying countless myths, tales, and narratives across the world.

Campbell identified three primary stages of this archetypal journey: Departure, Initiation, and Return. Each stage encompasses several substages, forming a rhythmical pattern that outlines the hero's path from the mundane world to the realm of the extraordinary and back again.

In the first stage, Departure, the hero lives in an ordinary world before receiving a call to an adventure or journey. Often, this call is initially refused, but eventually, the hero crosses the threshold, entering an unknown, challenging world.

During the second stage, Initiation, the hero faces a series of trials, meeting allies and enemies, and confronting their deepest fears. It is through these trials that the hero grows, transforming into a figure of strength and wisdom. The hero achieves an apex in this stage, often signified by a great victory or attainment of an important object or knowledge.

Finally, in the Return stage, the transformed hero returns to the ordinary world. They're not the same as when they left; they bring back the wisdom and power they gained on their journey, using it for the betterment of their community.

The Hero's Journey, as depicted by Joseph Campbell, illuminates how personal transformation is not just a process, but a journey. It is a metaphor for life's adventure, offering a framework for personal growth and self-realization. Whether it's in stories we read or on your cork yoga mat during an Asivana yoga challenge, the essence of the Hero's Journey encourages us to embrace our adventures, face our challenges bravely, and emerge stronger, wiser, and more self-aware. It's a testament to the hero that resides in each of us, ready to embark on their unique journey.
