2025 Analysis Ranked High-Intensity Yoga First for Sleep Quality, but It Does Not Settle the Best Exercise for Insomnia

Current assessment: The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline circulated by Inkorr on August 11: a 2025 network meta-analysis led by researchers affiliated with Harbin Sport University ranked high-intensity yoga first among the exercise categories it examined for sleep quality in people with sleep disturbances. It does not establish that yoga is the most effective exercise for all people with clinically diagnosed insomnia.
Inkorr reported that Chinese researchers had identified yoga as the leading exercise approach for insomnia, citing a meta-analysis of 30 randomized controlled trials involving more than 2,500 participants. The underlying paper, published in Sleep and Biological Rhythms on July 11, 2025, analyzed 30 trials with 2,576 participants and searched the literature through September 30, 2024. Its authors reported that yoga ranked highest for sleep-quality improvement in their network comparison, ahead of walking, resistance exercise, combined exercise, dance, traditional Chinese exercise and aerobic exercise.
The paper’s highest-ranked prescription was specifically described as high-intensity yoga performed twice a week, for sessions of 30 minutes or less, over eight to 10 weeks. Its ranking analysis placed yoga only narrowly ahead of walking on the exercise-type measure. The available record therefore supports reporting that this particular analysis favored a defined yoga prescription; it does not support treating the finding as a settled clinical hierarchy across all exercise, sleep, and patient groups.
Supporting evidence: The Harbin Sport University analysis used a network meta-analysis, a method that combines direct trial comparisons with indirect comparisons across a network of studies. The authors found that both yoga and walking showed better sleep-quality outcomes than control conditions in pairwise comparisons. Their conclusion was that the specified yoga program was the most effective exercise prescription in their dataset for improving sleep quality among people experiencing sleep disturbances.
That is meaningful evidence in favor of yoga as one potentially useful exercise-based option. The study also drew on randomized trials rather than purely observational research. But its outcome was sleep quality in a broad sleep-disturbance population, not a single uniform diagnosis of chronic insomnia, and the included interventions, participants, and control conditions varied across trials.
Limitations and competing evidence: Inkorr’s framing compresses important distinctions. Its article uses “insomnia,” while the underlying study describes participants with sleep disorders or sleep disturbances and evaluates sleep quality. Those categories overlap but are not interchangeable. The paper itself cautioned that interpretation should account for the limited number of included studies and the particular characteristics of the studied population.
Recent research also produces different rankings when the population and outcome change. A 2025 network meta-analysis restricted to older adults with insomnia ranked strengthening exercise first for subjective sleep quality. A 2024 review of middle-aged and older adults ranked aerobic exercise first for the overall Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score, although yoga ranked highest for several individual sleep components. A separate 2025 review focused on adults with insomnia concluded that yoga, Tai Chi, and walking or jogging appeared more effective than other exercise interventions, while rating much of the underlying evidence as low certainty or noting risk-of-bias concerns.
These findings are not necessarily contradictory. They appear consistent with a more limited interpretation: several forms of exercise can improve sleep-related outcomes, and which program ranks highest depends substantially on the participants studied, the sleep measure used, how the exercise was classified, and the duration and intensity of the program. Network rankings are also not the same as large, direct head-to-head trials showing that one exercise consistently outperforms every alternative.
Current conclusion: A cautious reading is that the Inkorr report is based on a real peer-reviewed analysis and that high-intensity, short-duration yoga ranked first within that analysis for sleep quality among people with sleep disturbances. The available evidence does not establish yoga as the universally most effective exercise for insomnia, nor does it show that the same regimen is appropriate for every person with sleep problems. Direct comparative trials using clearly diagnosed insomnia populations, standardized yoga protocols, and objective as well as self-reported sleep outcomes would materially strengthen or revise this assessment.
