Why We Partnered with The Root Board

Jack Utermoehl

The Root Board brand grew out of a simple problem: how do you maintain a stable, focused yoga practice when you’re at home on carpeted floors or uneven surfaces?

Kathy and Brian McCarthy, longtime yogis, answered that question during the pandemic by designing a bamboo platform that replicates the firmness and balance of a yoga studio. What started as a homemade solution for their family quickly evolved into a mission to help other yogis create dedicated, distraction‑free spaces for self‑exploration and deeper mind‑body connection.

Today, The Root Board remains a family‑run business committed to elevating home practice with sustainably crafted products. This ethos aligns with Asivana Yoga’s mission to empower and inspire practitioners through intentional design and high‑quality materials.

The Root Board Home Yoga Practice Foundation Solution

What Makes The Root Board Special

The signature Root Board is designed to bridge the gap between a studio floor and your living room. Made from eco‑friendly, highly renewable Moso bamboo, it provides a firm, flat foundation that brings the feel of a yoga studio to carpet, patios, grass or sand. Each board uses a cross‑hatched, three‑layer bamboo construction that is both strong and durable. With a total weight of 28 pounds and two ergonomic handholds, the board stays put during practice yet remains portable for outdoor sessions.

Thoughtful Design Details

Every Root Board is handmade by yogis for yogis. The 12 mm thick bamboo is responsibly harvested and finished with a durable six‑coat ultraviolet finish. Ergonomic handholds make it easy to carry, and side clips keep the two panels together. The board’s dimensions (about 76 ¾ × 28 ½ × ½ inches) and manageable panel weight allow you to set up a stable, supportive surface wherever you roll out your mat.

Born From a Commitment to Community

The founders created The Root Board out of a love for yoga and a desire to serve the community. They believe yoga makes the world a better place and designed their products so practitioners could continue to grow despite external challenges. By using sustainable materials and focusing on quality craftsmanship, The Root Board embodies our shared values of unity (yoga), inner heroism (vira), community (kula), service (seva) and non‑harm (ahimsa).

Why We Partnered with The Root Board

Why We Partnered with The Root Board

The Root Board’s story resonates with our own values. By transforming a personal challenge into a supportive product for others, the McCarthy family exemplifies vira as the courage to act for the benefit of the community. Their emphasis on sustainable materials and durable craftsmanship reflects ahimsa and honors the planet.

The portability and stability of their boards encourage practitioners to create a dedicated space for self‑care, fostering unity and connection (yoga and kula) even when practicing at home. By partnering with The Root Board, Asivana Yoga supports a family‑run business that elevates practice and contributes to a more mindful world.
