Review: The Bamboo Root Board

My verdict: The Bamboo Root Board is a practical solution for yoga on carpet and other soft ground. I used it extensively on carpet in my apartment and found that the firm, flat bamboo platform made balancing and moving between poses feel much more predictable. It is sturdy, attractive, and useful for a dedicated home practice. At roughly 28 pounds, it is also a considered purchase rather than an everyday travel accessory.

What is the Bamboo Root Board?

The Bamboo Root Board is a two-piece Moso bamboo platform designed to sit underneath a yoga mat. It creates a firm floor-like surface when the ground underneath is carpet, grass, or another softer material. The two panels fit together, with side clips available for additional stability.

I found the board most useful at home. When a mat lies directly on thick carpet, its surface can shift and deform in standing postures. This board provides a flatter foundation. It does not replace attentive balance, good technique, or a suitable mat.

How it performed in my practice

I've practiced on the Root Board in my carpeted living room, at a peach orchard, and outside in desert conditions. The biggest improvement was being able to spread out my yoga mat on an even platform instead of working directly against a soft surface.

The two sections fit together neatly. The included clips help when the surface is especially soft or uneven. On some carpet, I noticed an occasional small slide when I pushed hard in one direction during a Vinyasa yoga transition. Slowing down and moving with more control addressed that for my practice. I would not describe the board as immovable or suitable for every inversion.

Is the Root Board worth it for carpeted yoga?

For someone practicing several times per week on carpet, I think it offers a meaningful improvement. I would consider it especially worthwhile when moving furniture or changing rooms is difficult and a hard floor is unavailable. For occasional yoga, a simple mat on an already firm floor is likely sufficient.

Root Board care and setup

Place both panels on as even a surface as possible, align the seams, and use the supplied clips when they are needed. Before practice, check for shifting and leave enough clearance around your mat. For cleaning, a lightly damp cloth followed by drying is a sensible starting point. Since bamboo reacts to humidity and temperature, follow the manufacturer's care guidance rather than using arbitrary chemical cleaners, saturating the panels, or leaving them outdoors.

My recommendation

I enjoyed having a stable platform on carpet. It let me keep my home practice consistent, and I appreciated the simplicity of the design. I recommend considering the Root Board if the surface under your mat is holding back your practice.
