What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini yoga, often called the "yoga of awareness," is a powerful practice that combines physical movement, breath control, mantra chanting, and meditation.

Its goal is to awaken and raise the dormant Kundalini energy located at the base of the spine and channel it through the chakras to expand consciousness and accelerate spiritual growth.

This style is built around kriyas—specific sequences that blend posture (asana), breathwork (pranayama), and mantra. Each kriya is designed to work energetically and physiologically on targeted systems of the body and mind.

Origins of Kundalini Yoga

The roots of Kundalini yoga are found in Vedic and Tantric traditions, though the modern structure was introduced to the West by Yogi Bhajan in 1969. For centuries, these practices were passed down through initiated lineages and considered advanced, esoteric teachings.

Its foundation includes a deep understanding of subtle energy, chakra systems, nadis (energy channels), and inner alchemy. The practice serves as both a tool for personal awakening and a system for holistic well-being, uniting breath, movement, sound, and intention.

Kundalini Yoga Practice

A typical session begins with tuning in using a mantra, followed by warm-ups, kriya (a complete set of physical, breath, and meditation practices), deep relaxation, and a closing meditation.

The kriyas may include rhythmic movement, prolonged breath retention, or chanting, and are often structured to elevate energy and clear mental patterns.
