Sri Sharath Jois of Ashtanga Yoga
Sharath Jois, a cornerstone of the Ashtanga yoga community, passed away November 11th, 2024 at the age of 53. Born in 1971 in Mysore, India, Sharath dedicated his life to preserving and teaching the rigorous practice of Ashtanga yoga, a lineage passed down from his grandfather, the esteemed Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
He founded the Sharath Yoga Centre. His life was an embodiment of discipline, devotion, and a deep commitment to helping others on their journey toward self-realization.
Sharath's Legacy
Sharath Jois' influence on Ashtanga yoga extended far beyond the shala (practice space) in Mysore. As the director of the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI), he became the face of traditional Ashtanga practice, respected globally for his strict adherence to the method. His leadership ensured that Ashtanga yoga maintained its authenticity in an era where many forms of yoga have been diluted or modified.
Sharath’s role went beyond simply leading classes; he preserved a sacred tradition by teaching thousands of students the correct vinyasa, the importance of breath (pranayama), and the pursuit of meditative awareness within physical practice. He upheld the integrity of Ashtanga yoga while offering a deep sense of compassion to practitioners who sought his guidance.
Impact on the Global Yoga Community
Sharath Jois’ influence brought Ashtanga yoga to new generations, emphasizing the importance of daily practice and the connection between breath and movement. His workshops, which spanned across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, inspired practitioners to delve deeper into the practice—to see it not merely as a series of poses but as a transformative, lifelong journey.
Under his leadership, Ashtanga yoga remained a powerful tool for transformation, demanding discipline but offering incredible growth to those willing to commit. Sharath often spoke of yoga as a "moving meditation," emphasizing that true progress came not from achieving advanced poses, but from approaching each breath, each movement, with full awareness.
A Teacher with Profound Humility
For many, what set Sharath apart was his humility. Despite his status, he approached teaching with simplicity, humor, and accessibility. He frequently spoke about his grandfather's influence, sharing stories of how he learned by observing and practicing alongside Pattabhi Jois from a young age.
Sharath taught not only through asana (physical posture) but also through his presence—his dedication to waking at 2:30 a.m. to begin practice before teaching others, and his steadfastness in leading students by example. He emphasized consistency, urging practitioners to show up on the mat each day regardless of the challenges faced. This dedication became a hallmark of the Ashtanga community worldwide.
Moving Forward: Honoring Sharath’s Teachings
Sharath Jois' passing marks the end of an era, but his teachings and influence will continue to guide the Ashtanga community. His students, teachers in their own right, carry his lessons forward, ensuring that this traditional practice continues to thrive. Sharath often said, "Yoga is a journey of the self, through the self, to the self." His legacy will continue to inspire that journey for generations to come.
As we reflect on his teachings, we can honor Sharath by embracing the discipline and devotion he so passionately embodied. Whether you're stepping onto your mat for the first time or are an experienced practitioner, Sharath's words serve as a reminder: true yoga is about showing up, breathing deeply, and moving with intention.
