Surya mudra, known as the gesture of the sun, symbolizes the radiant energy and transformative power of the sun. This mudra boosts metabolism, enhances vitality, and helps energize the body’s fire element by activating the solar plexus chakra (manipura), the center of willpower and energy.
The thumb (fire) pressing against the ring finger (earth) stimulates the fire element while regulating the earth element.

Instructions to Perform Surya Mudra
Sit in a comfortable, upright position or stand with a straight spine.
Hand Position: Fold your ring finger (earth element) down toward the base of your thumb. Press the thumb (fire element) gently against the folded ring finger. Keep the other fingers extended and relaxed. Hold the mudra with one or both hands.
Posture: Sit in sukhasana (easy pose) or tadasana (mountain pose).
Breathing Technique: Inhale deeply through the nose, feeling the warmth of the sun radiating through your body. Exhale slowly, focusing on boosting your inner fire.
Duration: Practice for 5-10 minutes, especially in the morning to boost metabolism and energy for the day. Or hold Surya mudra for moments in each yoga pose as you move through a flow.

Personal Insights
One of my personal favorites. Surya mudra is a powerful mudra of fire and heat. With it, we can generate energy within us and act on it.
Surya means 'sun' and it acts just as the sun does, as a generator of power through fire. When we want to transmute some quality within us, a bad habit, or a negative thought pattern, Surya burns that, transforming it into something new.
But what will it be? That's up to you to understand. Through Surya mudra, I've come to understand why I act the way I do and what actions and reactions are in control. Through that understanding, I have the power to shift into a better version of myself.
I often use Surya mudra during my asana (physical postures) practice to amplify my efforts, activate my strength, and direct my prana.
