What is Sivananda Yoga?

Jack Utermoehl

Sivananda yoga, a form of hatha yoga, is renowned for its holistic approach, intertwining physical health with spiritual growth. Established by Swami Vishnudevananda in honor of Swami Sivananda, it encompasses a comprehensive set of practices including asanas, pranayama, relaxation, and meditation.

What sets Sivananda yoga apart is its structured approach based on five core principles. These principles guide practitioners not just in physical postures but also in breathing, relaxation, diet, and positive thinking, aiming to cultivate a balanced lifestyle.

Origins of Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda yoga was established in 1959 by Swami Vishnudevananda, a disciple of Swami Sivananda. It was developed to promote a well-rounded practice that goes beyond physical asanas to include spiritual and philosophical elements.

The practice is deeply rooted in the teachings of Swami Sivananda, emphasizing the unity of body, mind, and spirit. It incorporates Vedanta philosophy, advocating for a life of service, love, and meditation.

Sivananda Yoga Practice

Sivananda yoga's foundation rests on five principles: proper exercise (asanas), proper breathing (pranayama), proper relaxation (savasana), a vegetarian diet, and positive thinking with meditation. These principles aim to harmonize physical, mental, and spiritual health.
